At a Crossroads
Summer reaches its climax this weekend at the Sunset Junction street festival in Silver Lake.
Celebrating little more than a really complicated intersection, the festival's three stages showcase musical styles as divergent as its attendees.
There's John Cale and Rilo Kiley playing back-to-back. Chaka Kahn (let me rock ya). Flamenco music. Drums of Passion. Jody Watley. And a big block on the Saturday day sked devoted to DJ-driven jams.
And music isn't the only draw at the Junction. It's also a place to gnosh as you go — on fair foods and bites from local restaurants. Or shop the booths and take home the work of a local artist. Or get massaged for ten minutes. Or try on outrageous sunglasses you would never buy.
The crowd is a melting pot forreal. Neo-primatives have their tatts on display for Latino families and blossoming celebs. The gay leather-and-studs set mingles with an onslaught of Silver Lake yupsters. Stray gang members. Chinese immigrants. Recent grads on their way to Burning Man.
All coming together to flood the streets in celebration of … the streets.
