August 25, 2005 Mini-Smart Maybe you've spotted this new West Hollywood store as you traversed Santa Monica Blvd. With its spare facade and brightly lit interior, it's a marriage of clean, modern design and 7-11 style convenience. But what is it? It's Famima!! A worldly wonder of in-and-out shopping. Bags of potato chips share shelf space with Asian specialties like Pocky (little bread sticks dipped in chocolate). But the food doesn't end with quick snacks. Kitchen-sink eaters will appreciate the number and variety of ready-to-eat fresh foods with an emphasis on international. Braised beef short ribs; pâté en croute; a sukiyaki rice bowl; a Western bento box, complete with penne pasta, meatballs and breaded chicken; Chicken Forestiere. This is stuff that's not always easy to find at a full-on grocery store, let alone a junior market. There's also a deli counter, an aisle devoted to colorful stationery items, a coffee bar, and a curiously vast selection of bottled waters. The big drawback? That there's only one Famima!! in L.A. But if the company has it's way, that soon will change. They're planning 250 new locations within the next five years. Maybe then they'll upgrade their name with a third exclamation mark. Famima!! is located in West Hollywood at 8525 Santa Monica Blvd. at La Cienega.
