August 23, 2005 The Bleeding Edge Larry's Shaver Shop is not exactly what you might think. For one, it's not owned by Larry. And secondly, it's not just a shaver shop. A more appropriate name for the Santa Monica store front would be something with "blades" in it. Because Larry's Shaver Shop has as many blades of the non-shaving variety as it does shavers. Hunting knifes. Cooking knives. Swiss Army knives. Military knives swathed in camouflage. Samurai swords. And a replica of the saber featured in the film Blade. Larry's has them all. Oh yeah — and it happens to be an authorized Remington Electric Shaver servicing facility, too. The operation has been in business for over half a century. Now run by the original Larry's brother in law, Don, the place has the feel of a dusty mom-and-pop establishment. An Old-California feel pretty rare in the age of the monster chain. If you happened to notice the mention of the shop in the August issue of Los Angeles magazine as the best shaver supply store in the city, you might have envisioned Larry's as a fashion Mecca — bleeding edge, if you will. But in fact, what gives the spot its charm is how far it falls from hipsterhood — despite its location in the center of trendy Santa Monica.
