Hump Day
Some of the finest local sushi can be found not at a marina, but at an airport. Who knew?
You would think the draw of The Hump, one of three restaurants located on site at the Santa Monica airport, would be the chance to sip cocktails and watch planes land.
But in fact its outdoor patio, with its sweeping views of the runway, sits empty while the real show goes on inside.
Before you come, be warned: The Hump is not for everybody.
First, there's the expense. This spot is for sushi lovers willing to let go of some coin to indulge their raw passions.
Beyond that, The Hump can be a hurdle for the weak of stomach.
When it hits the plate, a significant percentage of the fish served at The Hump is still moving. It's what you might call…fresh.
But if that leaves you feeling a little weak in your constitution — then get an amendment because this is sushi forreal. You'll find delicacies here that are hard to come by elsewhere.
Sure, the basics — your yellowtail, your eel and avocado — are available to order. But at a premium. You're better off saving those for Hama and coming to The Hump when you're ready to kick it up a notch.
