Martial Law
Hollywood hearts fight scenes from the Far East, at least judging by the number of wire stunts in today's blockbuster flicks. Sure you could fight about who's the better action choreographer, Yuen Woo-Ping or Ching Siu-Tung, but if you really want to get your fill of fighting, then get to the Festival of Martial Arts.
There's a quirky film festival, with titles ranging from the The Karate
Kid to Bruce Lee's seminal Enter the Dragon. It's also a rare opportunity
to see both Kill Bill movies back to back on the big screen. Or The Matrix. Or Jet Li's Once Upon A Time In China.
Or, if watching isn't your thing but doing brings out your hidden dragon,
enroll in the training clinic and learn the Shaolin Five Animal
Techniques — We don't know what they are, but how cool would it be to say
you could use them?
Steer away from the seminars — unless you're thinking about trading in the
day job for a karate uniform and opening a school. Instead, put your mad
skillz to use by auditioning for a reality show. "The Next Martial Arts
Superstar" will hold a casting call inside the festival.
If things go well and they offer to make you the next Tony Jaa … don't
fight it.
The Festival of Martial Arts is taking place this weekend in and around the Universal Sheraton hotel. A day pass is $99. |
