Rock the Wall
Summer in Deskopolis may have you climbing the walls. But there's a better way to gain a height advantage right here in L.A.
Rockreation is a climbing gym with 10,000 feet of sculpted climbing terrain. Enroll in a Fight Gravity class to learn the basics and work some of the muscles you'll need in the great outdoors. $99 gets you three classes and a month's gym membership.
Another option is to climb high. High-tech that is. On the walls at Absolution, the "holds" you grip on your climb light up to recommend a route. From the same folks who brought you the Spy School workout, this climbing experience packs a video game feel. Jump into a clinic here for $25.
But if the idea of an indoor climb doesn't get your rocks off, Absolution can hook you up with a climbing expedition on a mountain that's for real. Prices start at $100.
An upside to the sport is that it's an all-over body workout, burning 700 to 900 calories per hour. All that pulling yourself up builds your arms — and most of all your hands.
And you know what they say about big hands …
