Go Kart Go
Stop and go. Stop and go. Stop and go.
Another day on the 405? More like a good piece of advice. STOP sitting in traffic and GO kart racing.
Think it's a kiddy sport? Jim Hall Kart Racing School might change your mind. The school is putting the finishing touches on an all new, super-serious track. And the super-serious classes taught on the course are also seriously fun.
Situated among a bunch of boxy industrial buildings in Oxnard, creature comforts at Jim Hall are few — for now. No running water yet. No flushing toilets. Just a half a mile of pavement set 25 feet wide and twisted into the most precarious of turns.
Courses combine classroom time with sessions on the track behind the wheel of a sprint kart. Sure these babies don't quite reach the same speeds as the 6-speed shifter karts, but their 100cc, 17-horsepower engines with a top speed of 80 m.p.h. still pack major racing flavor.
First-time drivers can expect big improvements. By the last time trial turn on the track, with the wind in your teeth and a buzz on your buns, you won't want the rush to end. But it does — all too soon.
Then you're back pumping pedal on the 405 — reminding yourself not to put the horsepower before the kart.
Jim Hall Kart Racing School is located at 2600 Challenger Place, Oxnard, CA 93030. Call 805.654.1329 or email jhrkart@west.net for reservations. Half-day course: $195. Full-day courses start at $350.
