Overdrive
Maybe you've seen it while cruising the 101.
Several stories worth of draped green netting rising above
Hollywood's low-slung rooftops. From a distance, it looks like the
netted ceiling of a bird sanctuary. Or perhaps a cage ... for a
pterodactyl.
No, not a dinosaur range, golfers know we're talking about a driving
range. Majestic Golf Land consumes an entire city block, even though
at 190 yards, it's not quite the size of a full-scale set-up. But if
that's a problem for you, Tiger, just think how macho you'll feel as
your balls pound the back of the net.
In many ways this driving range stands shoulder to shoulder to the
country club variety. There are plenty of tees (three tiers' worth), an
automatic ball delivery system that brings the ball up to you through
a little hole in the turf, a golf school, a café where you can relax
into a plate of bulgolgi after perfecting your swing, and, of course,
a pro shop.
Costs vary by time of day. Before 3pm you can hit 74 balls for $5.
After 3pm you're down to 57 balls for the same amount. There's also a
free putting green where you can practice your short game.
So the next time you're cruising the 101, make sure your clubs are in the trunk.
