Firecracker, Firecracker
Fireworks in Los Angeles. Illegal right?
Definitely. Check out this message from the LAFD Web site:
The Los Angeles Fire Department reminds you that all fireworks, even the so-called "safe and sane" variety are illegal in the City of Los Angeles! Those who use, possess or merely transport any type of fireworks are subject to severe penalty.
But let's say you … have a friend. And let's say your friend wants to get in on a little 4th of July pyrotechnics. Something relatively safe but with all the fun metaphors you remember from childhood. Snakes. Roses. Fountains. And the classic, sparklers.
Lucky for your, er, friend, laws vary from city to city within L.A. County, which means it's perfectly legal to sell (read: buy) your fantasy firemakers just over municipal lines.
If you don't want to go chasing around, there's one place we know for sure will be rocking out the boom-boom sticks today from 9am to 11pm.
Patriot Fireworks has stands all across Alhambra. One is located only a stone's throw from the 10 freeway at the Fremont exit, and several others are boldly demarcated all along Fremont.
Buy your 'crackers a la cart or go for a package deal which could save you a buck or two. Packages range from $9.99 up to $499 for the Big Bang. Sparklers, a mere 50 cents a box. Be sure you ask for some punk — a bit like incense but without the funk — to get your wicks lit.
That ought to get your fire started — legal or not.
