High Res
It's time for a new resolution. RES for short.
Get yourself to Hollywood tonight for a traveling collection of short films known as the RES Screening Series. Itty-bitty films. Some the length of a commercial. Many the length of a music video. (Several ARE music videos.) Some, like John Bryant's Oh My God, as long as ten minutes.
Get a close-up of an innovative Beck video from Motion Theory. Cut to a mini-retrospective of UK-based motion-graphics house NE-O.
Don't wait until the last minute to jump in line. Res may strike you as a fringe event but it draws a crowd.
Are the shorts worth the wait? Well, that depends on what criteria you assess
them by. Many are too experimental to be judged on the same basis as, say,
the Oscars. Take them instead as little works of art: Out
there — but also mind expanding.
Plus, short means that if you hate any particular one, it will be over in a jiffy anyway.
The fun doesn't end when the lights go up and you unstick your shoes
from the theater floor. Get into the heads of the filmmakers with a little
Q & A following the show. Then cutaway to Geisha House, for DJ-driven post-screening revelry. Cue dancers!
