On Broadway
There was a time not long ago when, to be hip, a bar had to be: 1) In Hollywood and 2) Nearly impossible to find.
But times change. Bars now are cropping up on — gasp — main thoroughfares. In plain sight. And Hollywood? It's still home to hot spots but faces stiff competition downtown.
Just ask Cedd Moses.
Today he opens The Broadway Bar, a bastion of hipsterhood right in the part of town built so high it's like an architectural case of standing-room-only.
This on top of the bars already in his fold: Cobras and Matadors, Cobra Lily, Liquid Kitty, 4100 and Golden Gopher. Not to mention a couple new additions slated for downtown.
The space is really two bars in one. Street level, a circular bar wraps around a tower of fine liquors. Climb the stairs and a secondary bar serves revelers enjoying the view of downtown from the balcony — including the newly re-lit Eastern Clock, just catercorner.
The atmosphere is distinctly OG. A dark space accented with lighting fixtures from yesteryear. Hotel lobby carpeting under foot. Cushy couches and mirrored wall panels. Old world comforts customized for a modern crowd.
One advantage downtown bars have — at least for now — is that after 7pm street parking is plentiful and free. Unless you count what you pay that homeless guy for watching your ride.
The Broadway Bar is located at 830 South Broadway, between 8th and 9th Streets, downtown.
