Film Comes Home
If Cannes for you is a big "can't," don't get discouraged — you live in the movie capital of the world. And yes, L.A. has its own film festival.
While not as glitzy as Cannes or as political as Sundance, the Los Angeles Film Festival is a chance to see a slew of films that may never be shown on the big screen in this city again, as well as preview some of the summer's buzz-worthy flicks.
One film to catch is the krump dance flick Rize, directed by famed photog David La Chappelle. The dance moves in Rize are so frenetic that a disclaimer had to be put in the opening credits saying no portion of the movie had been sped up.
If you've lamented the lack of music videos on MTV, then check yourself into one of the three music video showcases. Dance in your seat to releases from Interpol, Peaches, Fat Boy Slim, David Bowie, Sigur Ros and many others.
At $10 per screening, the costs can add up — not to mention the opening night film's $100 tix. But some films fall in with our favorite price: Free! Pig flick Babe, for instance, celebrates its 10th anniversary with a free screening at the Santa Monica Pier.
If this year's movie-going experience has left you dissed by the Sith, this may be the festival for you.
The Los Angeles Film Festival runs June 16 - 26 at various locations. |
