Howdy, Taix
Throw yourself back to a time when elegant decor meant flocked wallpaper and heavy chandeliers. A time when French cuisine was considered exotic and fine French restaurants were the stomping ground of Hollywood glamour gals and guys.
Times may have changed, but not much else has at Taix (pronounced "Tex"). The decor is as old-school fancy as it was when the restaurant moved to its current location in 1962. Even the owners have stayed the same, as a fourth generation of Taix-ans takes the reins.
Best of all, retro prices. Start with valet parking at a paltry $1.25.
For $10.95 any night of the week you can dine on Taix's famous roast chicken with Bordelaise sauce. But the real indulgence is Monday's specialite du jour, the filet mignon grillé, along with a soup course, a salad course and a sherbet dessert — for $16.95.
The prices also make Taix a wonderful spot for sampling fine wines. Michael Taix's passion for them shows in the wine list: 600 choices priced at about $5 above retail.
The restaurant is vast with little banquet rooms tucked away throughout. But one room not to be missed is the bar. Dark woods, recessed lighting, and wall-to-wall carpet evoke your parents living room circa 1974.
And while the setting is upscale, the attire is not. No jacket and tie required.
Taix is located at 1911 Sunset Blvd. in Echo Park. Call 213.484-1265 for reservations. |
