Grave Matters
Unless you moonlight as a vampire slayer, you probably don't consider the cemetery a cool spot to hang.
But L.A. movie lovers do.
All summer long, the non-profit Cinespia organization screens old movies at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery. Now in its fourth year, the org is kickin' it up a notch with a movie every Saturday night.
This week: The Alfred Hitchcock thriller classic "North by Northwest" — staring Cary Grant, Eva Marie Saint and a sinister crop dusting bi-plane that steals the whole movie.
Get there when the gates open to score a good spot — the living really crowd in on a warm night. Before the flick rolls you'll have an hour and a half to picnic, soak in the sounds coming off the turntables (thanks to a live DJ), and do some fairly exquisite people watching.
Will the cemetery creep you out? Nonsense — it's not like you're sitting on tombstones. The viewing space is actually a broad lawn. Grab a bottle of wine and some friends and build your spread under the stars. Nevertheless, you might also want to grab some candles and a flashlight to ward off cemetery shadows.
…And any possible ghosts of the 95,000 people in the ground around you.
Hollywood Forever Cemetery is located at 6000 Santa Monica Blvd at Gower. For more on the film series, visit Cinespia.org. |
