Come to the Cabaret
There's musical theater. There's avant guard theater. Then there's Cabaret Voltaire.
On the third Thursday of every month, Cabaret Voltaire (no relation to the band) presents a collection of cabaret style acts in a show that's edgy enough to be off-the-map altogether.
The acts vary month to month, but what never varies is that it's an outlet for artists whose performances are beyond the mainstream.
Tonight's show promises to be as out there as ever. A nude model is dedicating himself for sketching. Grab an Etch-A-Sketch or other drawing utensil supplied. Ellen Switkes will perform "Sex Education: A Mother's Comic Saga." Also, expect a special tribute to Channel 5 news anchor Hal Fishman.
The content of the show is likely to be more adult than usual tonight, as the organizers have imposed an 18-and-over-only door policy.
Come early for a chance to mingle with performers and an arty crowd in the theater lobby. Grab a drink at the donations-only wine bar before the show. Relax and get ready to enjoy what's on the verge of becoming an L.A. underground institution.
Catch Cabaret Voltaire at the Steve Allen Theatre. 4773 Hollywood Blvd. Tickets are $10. You can buy them (cash only) at the door, or use a credit card here.
