Embrace the Pink
Pink is for girls. Right?
Maybe not. Take Frenchy's in Burbank. They dole out
haircuts and color jobs in a retro setting torn from the parlors of
the fifties. But the preponderance of pink is only part of the story.
Owners Amy Wilson and Linda Husjord set the tone. Wilson sports a '49
Ford and hotrod girl aesthetic, while Husjord hits a vibe more rock
than rockabilly. The two, along with their crew of stylists punked
out in a variety of ways, draw a mixed crowd ranging from studio
execs to retro 'rodders looking to pump up their pompadours.
The popularity of Frenchy's among the Y-chromosome set shows that
guys are learning something that gals have long known: the point of
beauty services isn't just what you look like at the end. It's about
getting pampered in the process.
And if the word "pampering" vagues you out, try this: Part of the
haircut experience at Frenchy's involves an Aveda essential oils
scalp massage. Get your hair colored, and they throw in a hand massage.
There's cool reading on hand while you wait: vintage Playboys and old
pin-up books (mixed with current issues of Maxim, of course).
Though they're not a licensed barber shop, you can still get your
typical clipper cut for $25. But you're probably better off letting
them art-direct your look. It will cost you ten bucks extra, but you
might go from hair DON'T to hairdo.
Frenchy's Beauty Parlor is located at 2403 West Magnolia in the 'Bank (Burbank, that is). Call 818-845-7545 for an appointment.
