Negativ Energy
Some things are so good, they can't be legal.
No one knows this more than artist/activist collective Negativland. For 25 years, the group has appropriated copyrighted material, primarily music, for their art — and they bear the scars of multiple lawsuits to prove it.
You can learn all about their antics at Adventures in Illegal Art, tomorrow night. The main event is a presentation by group member Mark Hosler including a screening of the Negativland documentary Sonic Outlaws.
But if an art lecture doesn't sound like the most stimulating activity for a Saturday night, keep an open mind. There's also cabaret/semi-erotic circus entertainment (think contortionists and fire performers) from the Vau de Vire Society, live DJs, a slew of visual artists, four bars and what the organizers are calling "random oddities."
If those organizers have their way, there will be as much of a spectacle in the crowd as on stage. Attendees are encouraged to dress to the nines, tens and elevens — as politicians, religious leaders or corporate icons (expect to see a lot of Martha Stewarts in ankle bracelets).
Call it a wacky art extravaganza. Call it what you will, this "happening" is sure to be happening.
