Spin, Doctor
Is it time for a higher degree?
Maybe so, but if the periodic table isn't your thing, how about hitting a turntable instead?
Scratch DJ Academy trains aspiring turntablists. Like college for the cool, lessons here include mixing, blending, and scatching, with some music theory to boot. Take the six week beginner course to learn the basics and get some hands-on training at the turntable. Your instructors are dance-scene locals like Jahi Sundance, husband and wife team Faust and Shortee, and hip-hop beatster Dynamix.
Founded by the late Jam Master Jay of Run-DMC fame in collaboration with Reg E. Gaines who wrote "Bring in Da Noise,
Bring in Da Funk," the original Scratch started in New York with the goal of providing aspiring DJs with basic skills and the equipment to learn the craft.
The L.A. Scratch is a joint venture with Rehab Records, which is where the class takes place. You can score a private lesson for as low as $75 (depending on how many you take). Semester courses go for $300.
When you graduate, we'll call you "doctor" -- Doctor Jams. Doctor Scratch. Doctor Mix-a-Lot. The choice is yours.
