Forget Fruit on the Bottom
California may not have invented yogurt, but the creamy white stuff is as much of a defining food for this state as is, say, granola. From hippies to hipsters, yogurt is active culture -- that is, an active part of our culture.
Don't tell the California Dairy board, but the finest yogurt on the market is imported from Greece. FAGE Total Greek Yogurt with Honey may at first resemble some familiar supermarket novelties. It's a mix-it-yourself kind of product, with yogurt and honey separated into a main compartment and a sidecar.
Even without the honey, FAGE yogurt is a stand-out product. Rich and sour cream-like, you don't have to read the package to know that it ain't the non-fat variety. Mix it with a sticky dollop of Greek honey and what you've got is some serious indulgence. (Each serving is 250 calories, 110 of which are from fat, higher than the FDA recommended 30%).
But who cares? It's a treat that also happens to be highly nutritious. It's a high energy food.
Justify it anyway you have to. FAGE yogurt is a delicious take on a California classic.
You can find FAGE yogurt in the dairy case at Trader Joe's for $1.89.
