Beautiful Losers
Orange County. Everyone there is tanned, rich and vacuous, right? At lease that's what you've seen on TV, and it's not like you have any reason to go there.
A roll through the Beautiful Losers: Contemporary Art and Street Culture exhibit going on now at the Orange County Museum of Art might change your mind.
This ain't "The O.C."
The exhibit explores underground youth culture, subcultures and the various forms of art they've spawned. On display are items so integral a part of our native Southern California culture that you might not at first consider them the stuff of art: The graphics on the underbelly of a skateboard. A pair of tricked-out sneakers. A counterculture zine. Objects of your youth -- or perhaps objects you still have stashed under your bed because you can't bring yourself to let go of them.
If you're willing to tolerate rush-hour traffic, this Thursday you can catch two skateboard flicks which are part of the exhibit including Spike Jones-directed Hot Chocolate. They screen March 17, 6:00 - 10:00p.m.
And knowing how hard it is to part with your skateboard even for the duration of a museum tour, OCMA has assembled a "mini-ramp" which you can skate for free (free if you don't count the cost of admission, that is).
It may not be Dogtown but it's nice to see OCMA reveal some local color behind the orange curtain.
