Byrne Baby Byrne

How many David Byrne's are there? There's the pop star Byrne, made famous as a member of the Talking Heads. There's the world music Byrne, who churned out records long after his Heads fame had waned, including last year's Grown Backwards. And then there's the lesser known Byrne the artist, who has works displayed in museums worldwide.

It's this Byrne, the artist, who appears this evening at the UCLA Armand Hammer museum for "I Heart PowerPoint," a excerpt from his 2003 book/DVD project E.E.E.I. (Envisioning Emotional Epistemological Information).

Byrne claims that his work with Microsoft's PowerPoint program started off as a joke. With some tinkering he discovered he could use the software to make "pieces that were moving, despite the limitations of the medium." E.E.E.I. is the product of this discovery.

The event is free and Byrne's fans are loyal, so expect a serious crowd. Seating is first-come, first served, but if you don't get a seat inside the auditorium, you might still be able to hear the presentation on loudspeakers in the museum courtyard.
