Trump's Big Bargain
When you hear the name Trump, the word "bargain" may not jump to mind. But in fact, when Trump's new Palos Verdes golf course opens in June, it won't be such a bad deal. Unlike his other courses, the Trump National Golf Club Los Angeles course is public, meaning you won't have to pay a membership fee (upwards of $300,000) or dues to play.
But before you grab your clubs and head to the South Bay, here's what you should know:
What it cost Trump:
The Donald bought the course in 2002 for $27 million and since then has reportedly poured another $55 million into it, including a redesign by Jim Fazio.
What it will cost you:
$195 most weekdays, $300 Fridays and weekends. They will offer a "Twilight Rate" starting at $135. Clubs and a golf cart will rent for $50 each. And if you're not playing, but you just want to ride in the cart, that will run you $50 as well. Perhaps not a bargain compared to other public courses, but no hefty membership fee.
Be Careful Where you Stand:
The 18th hole had to be replaced after plummeting into the ocean in 1999.
What to Wear:
The Trump course will have a "strictly enforced" dress code. No shirts without collars, no denim, and shorts have to be longer than four inches.
When can I play?
The course is scheduled to open around the first of June, and they're not taking reservations (from the public, anyway) yet. We recommend calling in late April to inquire about a wait list. You can reach the pro shop at 310.303.3240.
Although the course itself might be a bargain, the luxury homes he's building around it are not. They range from $5 million to $9 million.
Information on the course is available at the Trump National Golf Club Web site.
