Watch Yourself

If postmodern architect Frank Gehry designed your house, would it rise above all the other houses in the neighborhood with great towering sails of shiny aluminum? If Frank Gehry designed your car, would its luminous peaks break records for aerodynamics? Would it draw the same awe-struck looks that Disney Hall gets from tourists as they pass before its metalic sheen? If Frank Gehry designed your watch...

Whoah! Hold on, Speed Racer. Frank Gehry did design a watch. And yes, it is as different from a 12-pointed, wheel-shaped clock face as the Guggenheim Bilbao is from the Guggenheim Soho.

First of all, for a digital watch it's got a crazy organic feel. In fact, the time is spelled out in Gehry's own handwriting. And it tells you the time the way you would tell it to a friend. 11:30 reads as "half past 11" and so on. And like Disney Hall, it's encased in brushed metal -- a lightweight titanium. All it needs now is for the alarm to sound a tune by the L.A. Philharmonic.

As Gehry buildings continue to pop up around the L.A. area (the architect plans to break ground on a new home for himself in Venice within the year), it's nice to know you can have your piece of the action for a mere $150.

We found this Frank Gehry watch at the Fossil Web site.
